Waterville, ME – Multi-Vehicle I-95 Work Zone Crash Claims Two Lives
Waterville, ME (January 13, 2026) – A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred on Tuesday, January 13, on Interstate 95 southbound near mile marker 127 in Waterville. The collision claimed the lives of two Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) workers. According to the Maine State Police, the crash was reported at approximately 9:35 a.m.
At the time, an active bridge construction project was underway near the Kennedy Memorial Drive on-ramp. Authorities said the southbound travel lane had been closed as part of the work zone. Cones and a posted stop sign were in place. A Kia minivan driven by a 34-year-old woman from Augusta reportedly failed to stop at the sign and attempted to enter the passing lane. The minivan was then struck by a southbound tractor-trailer on I-95. The impact forced the minivan into the construction area, where three MaineDOT workers were working.
Two workers, identified as 60-year-old James Brown and 51-year-old Dwayne Campbell, both of Waterville, were thrown over the bridge and onto Kennedy Memorial Drive below. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. A third MaineDOT worker was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
The minivan driver was also hospitalized with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. Two young children who were passengers in the minivan were not injured. The tractor-trailer driver was not hurt.
Maine State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
