Topsfield, MA – Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-95 Leaves One Dead, Another Critically Injured

Around 4:17 p.m., a 2008 GMC Acadia SUV with two occupants from Lynn suddenly decelerated and came to a stop near mile marker 71. A 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by a 52-year-old man from Peabody, attempted to avoid hitting the stopped Acadia by veering left toward the grass median.

Simultaneously, a 2006 Chevrolet Express Van in the leftmost lane tried to slow down and move left to avoid colliding with the Impala but failed. The Impala collided with the Express van, causing it to veer off the roadway, slide across the grass median, and overturn one-and-a-half times, ejecting two of the van’s four passengers.

Sadly, one of the ejected victims, identified as Valkisergio Costa Silva, a 44-year-old from Centerville, lost their life at the scene. The second ejected victim, a 30-year-old male, suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was urgently airlifted via Boston MedFlight to Boston Medical Center.

Additionally, the van’s third passenger, a 53-year-old male, sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The van’s 32-year-old driver from Yarmouth had minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, led by the Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
