Scarborough, ME – Injury Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving U-Haul and Tanker on I-95
Scarborough, ME (December 27, 2024) – A serious multi-vehicle crash occurred on I-95 southbound near mile marker 42 in Scarborough, causing injuries on December 27. Maine State Police reported that the collision took place around 6 p.m. Traffic in the area was already congested due to prior accidents when a U-Haul driven by 59-year-old Jason McAvoy of Old Orchard Beach collided with a tanker truck operated by Kenneth Openshaw of Massachusetts.
The impact caused the tanker to strike a Subaru driven by 32-year-old Thomas Gillis, which in turn rear-ended a Dodge Ram driven by 31-year-old Zachary Taylor of Searsmont. McAvoy was trapped inside the U-Haul, requiring extensive efforts by rescue teams to free him. He was later airlifted via LifeFlight to a Portland hospital with severe injuries. The other drivers were treated on-site for non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe fatigue and inattention played significant roles in the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
